Historically, respitory ailments were succesfully treated at seaside spa health centers. A sea salt saline-type solution involving the Brown kelp extract mannitol is being tested as an inhalant remedy. Mannitol, a suger molecule, is obtained from the kelp Laminaria saccharina (bladtång in Swedish), rich in this substance, and is believed to improve the delivery of saline into the respiratory system.
